<description>I think they were hoping that they could--given enough time--break your spirit and convert you to the state of mind for which most long-term residents are destined: institutionalization. It happens to prisoners after enough years of incarcertation. You stop challenging the abuses of power and mindlessly accept whatever crumbs of charity are tossed your way, often more to feed the ego of the donor than out of any true sense of humanity.

Even today I see my friend Anatole treated in ways that are actually illegal by his landlady. She gets away with this because there is nobody to advocate for him and she knows he won't go to the tenant's tribunal.

If I go on his behalf, she puts him out on the street...not a good thing in the middle of winter.

People in positions of power know when they have you by the balls, eh? Or think they do. As fussy.org says: "Writing well is the best revenge."
